Time Warner Cable (formerly Warner Cable Communications) is an American national cable company that operates in 27 states and has 31 operating divisions. It was formed in 1989 as a merger between Time Inc.'s cable television company and Warner Communications. 2. What service can Time Warner provide for me? Time Warner provides three major services for consumers: Digital cable, high-speed internet, and digital phone services. 5. What is CableCARD? CableCARD is an interface that can be installed into a digital TV to allow access to Time Warner Cable channels and programming without the need for a digital set box. They come in two types: Unidirectional and Open; Unidirectional cards only accepts incoming transmissions for viewing of channels. Open cards do as well, but also allow use of On Demand and interactive features. 6. What is the Digital Broadcast Transition? Starting in February 2009, all broadcast television will be switched from analog to digital. If you don't have a television that accepts a digital signal, you will lose service. All Time Warner Cable packages are digital. 7. What internet packages are available? Time Warner Cable's internet service is Road Runner Online, a cable modem service, with an average downstream speed of 10 Mbit/s, and an average upstream speed of 1 Mbit/s. There are two additional options: Road Runner Basic, a cheaper service, with average downstream of 1 Mbit/s and upstream of 256 kbit/s, and Road Runner Turbo, the more expensive service with up to 15 Mbit/s downstream and 1 Mbit/s upstream. Also, Time Warner Cable offers installation of local wireless networks within your household, compatible with Road Runner. In addition, Time Warner Cable is partnered with Earthlink and LocalNet for providing internet access. 8. What other features are available with Road Runner? Road Runner comes equipped with EZ-Armor Security software by Computer Associates, with parental controls and support. The Road Runner Web Portal also serves as a springboard for web-surfing. 9. What modems are compatible with Time Warner Cable internet? Purchasing the Road Runner service comes with a cable modem installed, but any DOCSIS-compatible cable modem should work with Road Runner.
